Android for cloud coding agents.A device outside the sandbox.

Cloud coding agents work in hosted VMs. Codex cloud, Cursor cloud agents and Claude Code on the web do not document KVM or an Android emulator; Devin documents setting one up inside its VM, and GitHub documents emulator acceleration on its Actions runners. A Ramus device runs outside the agent's VM, so the agent needs only an API key, network access to ramus.dev and the CLI.

Checked October 29, 2026. Other products change their plans and features; each claim about one links to its source.

Set it up.

Create an API key on Agents, add it to the agent's environment as RAMUS_API_KEY using the platform's secrets setting, and add one line to AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md:

Test Android changes on Ramus: https://ramus.dev/agents.md

The agent reads the reference, builds the APK with Gradle as usual and runs it on a device with npx ramus-cli session start --apk app-debug.apk --wait. Building needs no emulator. The CLI needs network access to npm and ramus.dev; the watch link it returns lets you follow along.

What each platform documents.

From each vendor's docs, checked on the date shown in the sources.

Cloud coding agents and Android emulators
Where the agent runsAndroid emulatorGiving it a Ramus key
Codex cloudWhere the agent runs:A VM for each task1Android emulator:Not documented; computer and browser use are listed as not yet supported1Giving it a Ramus key:An environment variable, with ramus.dev allowed in internet access1
Cursor cloud agentsWhere the agent runs:An isolated Ubuntu VM2,3Android emulator:Not documented. Forum posts ask for KVM and report software-only emulation.5Giving it a Ramus key:A runtime secret, exposed as an environment variable4
Claude Code on the webWhere the agent runs:An Anthropic-managed Ubuntu VM6Android emulator:Not documented6Giving it a Ramus key:An environment variable, with Full network access or a custom allowlist that includes ramus.dev6
GitHub Copilot cloud agentWhere the agent runs:A GitHub-hosted cloud sandbox by default, or a GitHub Actions job10Android emulator:Not documented for Copilot. GitHub Actions Linux runners document hardware acceleration for the emulator.11Giving it a Ramus key:An Agents secret, exposed as an environment variable12
DevinWhere the agent runs:A Linux VM7Android emulator:Documented: install the SDK and emulator in a blueprint; KVM may need configuring, and without it the emulator runs in a slower software mode8Giving it a Ramus key:A secret, bound as an environment variable9

Without KVM the Android emulator falls back to software emulation, which Google's docs call not supported and very slow.14,13 With it, as on Devin, the emulator still adds setup and memory to every session; a Ramus device moves that off the agent's machine and gives you a link to the same screen.

What the agent gets.

  • A clean device each session

Each new session gets a clean Android 17 emulator.

  • Checks that fail loudly

The agent names the text it expects after each tap or wait, and a miss comes back as an error. A screenshot and the device log show why.

  • A link for you

Every device has a watch link, so you can see what the agent saw. To take over, open your device page.

  • Builds from pull requests

Connect GitHub and Ramus builds Expo, React Native, Flutter and Gradle projects for each pull request, including ones agents open.

Questions.

Why not run the emulator inside the agent's VM?

Most hosted agent environments do not document KVM, and without it the emulator runs in a software mode Google calls not supported and very slow. Where it works, it adds setup to every session. A Ramus device runs elsewhere and the agent drives it with the CLI.

Can a cloud agent use the MCP server instead of the CLI?

Where the platform supports remote MCP servers with an API key, yes. The CLI works on any platform with a shell and network access, and it can upload the APK the agent just built.

Where do I get an API key?

On the Agents page in Ramus, after you sign in. A cloud agent uses a key because no person is there to approve ramus login. Store it in the agent platform's secrets setting, never in the repository.

Do agent sessions use my minutes?

Yes. Sessions an agent starts count toward your plan's minutes and device limit, like your own.
